Your 3 “Must Have” Kitchen Tools For Healthy Cooking (And Showers Of Praise)!

By Lisa Shanken
November 6, 2015

As a nutritionist, certified personal trainer, and culinary instructor, you bet I LOVE to cook, and on top of that, I love to cook healthy dishes bursting with flavor...

And having the right tools can truly mean the difference between hearing "polite" remarks about your meal... to being showered with "WOWs" and praise from your family and friends!

I have dozens of tools in my kitchen, but if I had to narrow it down to the 3 I rely on most, it would be my chef’s knife, my hand immersion blender, and my Spiralizer.

"Must Have" Healthy Cooking Tool #1

Let's start with the all-important chef's knife, and then move on to the "sexy gadgets" that bring versatility, uniqueness and fun to your cooking.

Because your your chef’s knife is a very personal choice, I don't recommend relying solely on someone else's recommendation... even if they're an expert chef. But with so many designs, sizes and brands - how do you find "The One?"

The best way is to be "hands-on" when shopping for your knife. Does it feel evenly balanced from back to front? Does it feel too heavy to hold or too light to cut hard vegetables like spaghetti squash? You'll also need to determine what size you like best because most chef knives come in 6, 8, and 10 inches.

Also, go to a neighborhood store and talk to a knowledgeable store employee who can explain the various blades, care and sharpening requirements. A good knife will last a lifetime, so allow yourself to splurge. It will make your cooking so much more enjoyable and you deserve it!

"Must Have" Healthy Cooking Tool #2

My next most cherished kitchen tool is my hand immersion blender.

I love this kitchen tool for its versatility. It does almost everything a blender can do (puree soups, chop small foods like garlic and ginger), but it's much smaller, more portable... and can be cleaned in the dishwasher!

You can see ratings for hand immersion blenders on ConsumerReports.org. Most importantly, I recommend choosing one with different attachments for pureeing, blending, and chopping to really maximize the power of this awesome tool!

"Must Have" Healthy Cooking Tool #3

My newest kitchen tool recommendation is the Spiralizer, which completely transforms the veggie experience!

Imagine turning summer squash, potatoes, turnips, onions, cabbage, parsnips, and more into different sizes of long spiral-shaped pasta-like pieces.

The Spiralizer is fantastic for making making vegetable “noodles,” curly fries, many gluten-free dinners and more! I especially love it because my kids are so much more keen to eat vegetables when they look (and twirl!) like noodles.

I have lots of Spiralizer recipes for you to try: Zucchini Linguine With Dairy-Free Kale-Basil Pesto, Rach's Creamy Mushroom Soup (gluten-free & dairy-free), Zucchini Chowder, and many more.

Once you start Spiralizing you'll never look back!

When most people hear the word mindfulness, they imagine sitting still with eyes closed, breathing calmly while thoughts slowly drift away. From Disorder to Diversity: A Short History of Autism & Neurodivergence Today, conversations about autism, ADHD, AuDHD, and “neurodivergence” are everywhere. Testimonials

Lisa’s weight loss plan really gave me a new insight to healthy eating and living. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2015. Healthy living/easting/exercise has become very important to me and my family and this program really helped me get even more on the course with this and helped me lose weight.

Danielle D, Great Neck, NY

When I heard about the 10 Day Weight Loss Challenge, I wasn’t sure if it would be a good fit, since as a physician, I understand nutrition and health (and therefore knew the dangers of fad diets, etc…), and I do my best to exercise (though not always enough). But as a single mother of 2, it’s still very challenging ti “fit in all in” (including cooking healthy meals for my children) due to my busy schedule. And when my time is short, bad habits crop up and weight gain follows.

Lisa has made an enormous contribution to my health and strength. I have seen and felt the most fantastic changes in an amazingly short time.

I just wanted to say you were amazing through this 10 day process! I learned so much from you! You were very thorough in all areas of the challenge and got back to us in such a quick manner with our questions. It was a great jump start into a more healthy life style that’s for sure!

Colby E, Boulder, Colorado

I LOVE the recipes, simple, few ingredients, appealing. I like the idea of using the list of staples you provided when i was tempted to cheat!

Phyliss S, Spring House, PA

I worked with Lisa to develop a holistic wellness plan that has allowed personal growth without having to completely change my lifestyle. Her programs are designed around your personal needs, so I always feel like I've gotten the most from my sessions and leave with manageable goals. Lisa's three-prong approach to wellness (fitness, nutrition and health) is helping me live a balanced and grateful life.

Ali S., Boulder, CO

I’ve been through the ringer with different dieting plans through the years. Some helped me lose weight and some didn’t – but it didn’t matter because I would always gain it back. I didn’t know if this 10 day Weight Loss Challenge would be the answer since everyone says they have the “BEST” way to lose weight. But this one seemed to be more doable – like instead of starving myself, keeping track of calories (“been there done that – VERY annoying!”) and things I know I wouldn’t stick to.

Jill W, Park, NY

Lisa, you have been a very positive role model for me! Through the exercise and diet I’m becoming healthy and more positive about my life!!! Thanks!
