Friendship “Maintenance”—Managing the ND Way
The "standard" societal rules of friendship often demand consistent texting, regular phone calls, and remembering milestones. For the neurodivergent brain—especially those with ADHD—this "maintenance" can feel like a mountain of chores and ultimately can lead to "friendship guilt." You deeply love your friends, but the struggle to stay in touch can make you feel like you're failing at the relationship.
Out of Sight, Not Out of Mind
Many of us experience "object permanence" issues with relationships. If we aren't seeing someone or being prompted to think of them, they might slip into the back of our minds. This doesn’t mean we don't care. However, today’s world has so much stimuli and our our brains are designed to focus on the immediate demands of the "now."
- The "Low Maintenance" Friend: The most sustainable neurodivergent connections are often those where you can go months without talking and pick up right where you left off. Finding "low maintenance" friends who understand your "radio silence" is key to long-term social health.
- Digital Boundaries: It's okay to tell friends you aren't a "texter" but love a scheduled hang-out. Being honest about your capacity is a form of care for the relationship.
- Authentic Community: True friendship shouldn't feel like a job or an item on a to-do list. It should be a place where your "glitches" are understood and your presence is celebrated, regardless of your response time or your ability to remember a birthday on the exact day.
